Adventure Impact : Specialist Programmes for Vulnerable Young People

Adventure Impact offers specialist development programmes for vulnerable young people and those with additional needs, enabling them to discover their potential through outdoor learning.

Adventure Impact is a specialist team within Adventure Plus which works with children and young people, aged 8-18 years, who are vulnerable, disadvantaged or who have additional needs. We engage and challenge these young people using outdoor activities, encouraging them to recognise their potential and develop positive aspirations. We provide a variety of courses in which young people gain exciting new experiences, life skills and recognised qualifications.

Who do we work with?

Taking referrals from Schools, Pupil Referral Units, Youth Offending Services, Social Services or Youth Organisations we work with children and young people:

  • In care or the edge of care
  • At risk of exclusion or excluded from school
  • Not in education, employment or training
  • With physical or learning disabilities
  • With low self-esteem, who have difficulty with confidence and communication
  • From refugee families

Our Aims

We aim to impact children and young people’s lives by offering them regular adventure and team building events, holidays and programmes thereby enabling them to:

  • Have fun, make new friends and appreciate the outdoors, producing positive memories.
  • Grow in self confidence, independence and social skills by 'learning outside the classroom', giving responsibility and encouraging leadership qualities and team ethos.
  • Develop hard skills and recognised achievements through the AQA Award Scheme.
  • Increase awareness of their personal strengths and abilities so they can recognise their potential and the positive contribution they can make.
  • Embrace risk in a healthy way, through challenging and safe activities.
  • Realise that they are valued and supported - and that we all have a positive contribution to make.
  • Prepare them to move forward confidently and successfully into the next chapter in their lives.

Working with small groups and building relationships over extended periods of time, we effectively mentor and make a positive impact in young people’s lives. Specifically, we aim to reduce behavioural problems, improve school attendance and academic performance and prevent offending behaviour and substance abuse.

See YOS Taster Course Report for an example course outcome analysis.

Our Adventure Impact programmes include outdoor activities such as archery, canoeing, kayaking, climbing, fencing, circus skills, bush craft, biking, team games and many more; and we firmly believe everyone can take part in any of the activities we offer. We work closely with families and referring organisations, customising our programmes to ensure the best possible outcome for the young people.

Our programmes include:

  • Weekly Alternative Education Days during school time, providing educational, outdoor activities for children struggling in school. These can incorporate ASDAN and BTEC courses.
  • Activity Days/Weeks during school term, weekends and holidays, for specialist schools and groups.
  • Regular Training/Discovery Programmes offering recognised qualifications in outdoor activities for young people excluded or at risk of exclusion from school, or from Educational Referral Units.
  • Specialised Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme courses for young people with additional needs offering a range of skills and experiences and a recognised Achievement Award.
  • Residential Programmes at one of our Associate Centres or an alternative venue of your choice. Activities could include night hikes, canoe expeditions, rafting, orienteering and many others; and can also incorporate ASDAN and BTEC courses.
  • Inclusion in Adventure Plus Activity Club, every Tuesday night during school term.

A brief evaluation of the desired outcomes is carried out at the beginning and end of each programme by referrers, teachers, parents and the young people and feedback is provided.

The nature of the courses and therefore course costs will vary with individual programmes. We are often pleased to hear how competitive our prices are. Contact the team for more details.
