A fun, sponsored canoe, sea kayak or mountain bike trip down the River Thames to raise money for Adventure Plus. The challenge is to complete the canoe and reach, or exceed, the sponsorship target.
Enjoy travelling at the speed of the river from West Oxfordshire all the way down to Westminster (taking 6 days to cover a journey that can be done in 2 hours by car), watch the river change and grow and admire such sights as Christchurch Cathedral, Magdalen Bridge, Windsor Castle and the Houses of Parliament. Why not sign up today?
Distances
The challenge takes place in 6 stages (see Route Map for details) and you can join us for anything from 1 to 6 days, depending on how big a challenge you want. Each day is approximately 24 miles so you could be paddling up to 7 or 8 hours in a day.
Sponsorship
The challenge is more than just the paddling. Each paddler needs to raise sponsorship as follows:
- 1 day - £250
- 2 days - £350
- 3 days - £450
- 4 days - £550
- 5 days - £650
- 6 days - £850
Achieve your target by 31 March 2011 and you will receive a free Witney to Westminster 2011 hoodie. Exceed it by £150 to receive a free, wooden Witney to Westminster paddle.
Children & Young People
Many families join the challenge e.g. as Father & Daughter(s) or Mother & Son(s) teams. Minimum age is 9, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult (or join as part of a supervised group). Registration fees and sponsorship targets are 50% of those for adults. Due to strong tides, the final day is more challenging and minimum age is 14. It is not possible for people to join for the final day only.
We also have a 'Big Canoe' which can hold up to 8 young people. So why not bring your friends or youth group for a day?
Sea Kayaks
Most paddlers will be in open canoes. However, if you are an experienced kayaker (and ideally can roll) you can also journey with us in one of the A+ sea kayaks, supporting the main canoe fleet group by paddling ahead to prepare locks and collect sponsorship.
